EFFECTIVENESS OF EGGSHELL AND BANANA PEEL BIOCOAGULANTS IN REDUCING TSS IN COAL MINE WASTEWATER

The coal mining industry produces liquid waste that has the potential to pollute the environment. The analysis results of coal mine wastewater at PT Mifa Bersaudara show that the parameters pH, Fe, and Mn already meet quality standards. However, the Total Suspended Solids (TSS) level still exceeds the established limit. This study aims to analyze the initial quality of coal mine wastewater and to analyze the effectiveness of eggshells and banana peels as natural biocoagulants in reducing TSS. The research methods include sampling at Water Monitoring Point (WMP) 13, laboratory testing with the jar test, variations in coagulant dosage (eggshells 0-5 g/L, banana peels 0-2 g/L), and sedimentation time (30, 60, 90 minutes). The results show that the optimal dosage of eggshells is 2 g/L at 30 minutes, which can reduce TSS from 489 mg/L to 138 mg/L, while the optimal dosage of banana peels is 1 g/L, which can reduce TSS to 181 mg/L. The use of these natural biocoagulants is proven to be effective and has the potential to be an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical coagulants.
